This was a triumph.

A very huggable Weighted Companion Cube that I made for my boyfriend as a birthday gift. While it wasn't made for Valentine's day (a day that I don't care all that much about one way or another), it nonetheless seemed like a good day to upload it.

The Weighted Companion Cube is from the game Portal, if you have chanced to avoid the hype. (Which, at least in this case is very well deserved. It's an excellent game that doesn't overstay its welcome, and I spent an election day playing through it when I would otherwise merely have been raging at the results of the vote count. I do not want those hours of my life back. :P )

~

Your Aperture Science Weighted Companion Cube measures about 25x25x25 centimetres, and makes quite a nice pillow for when you fall asleep in front of your computer. Your Aperture Science Weighted Companion Cube will never threaten to stab you, and in fact cannot speak. If your Weighted Companion Cube does speak, please disregard its advice.

This looks fantastic! I'm looking into making a companion cubs for my boyfriend for christmas/joint anniversairy.
I was wondering if you could offer some advice?
I've only ever done basic sewing for cosplay etc, but making something 3D? *Shudders*
I was wonderinghow you sewed the extra layers of fabric on to have such neat edges? Did you double them over before sewing?
And also making the round centre part with the heart, how do you get such neat edges?
I don't want to spend a fortune on materials then cock up with the sewing haha :')

Thank you, glad you liked it! :) Sorry that it's taken me a while to reply, but if you haven't already gone ahead with your cube construction, I can try to answer your questions as best as I can... fair warning though; I'm not at all an experienced seamstress of three-dimensional items either, and made everything up as I went along. Also, not that good at English sewing terminology. :P

I did double over the edged of the light grey pieces of cloth, yes. It was a fair bit of work. Where there was a curved edge, I'd cut notches most of the way into the parts that needed doubling over, so they wouldn't just bunch up. Maybe I could've skipped the folding if I'd made it with something less unravelly, like felt, but on the other hand, felt seems to be more prone to pilling, so I guess both ways have their disadvantages.

Also, since I wanted it to hold a square shape and not turn into a ball when I stuffed it, or get all squashed if someone happened to sit on it, I made a square core out of mattress-type foam, which I then covered with a layer of wadding. I guess this might not be necessary, but since I had a bit of foam to work with, I thought it was easier to have a solid square shape to build everything else around. Gives it more structural stability, too -- it's been juggled and slept on and abused in various ways since I made it, and it's still recognisably square. :D I also stuffed the light grey bits (the thicker, fluffier type of wadding for the corners, and a thinner, more compact type for the rest).

Good luck, hope it'll go well!

Thank you so much - that's a big help! So i'm presumign you made your cube with a zipepr to fit the foam in? I was hoping to just fill it with little polestyrine balls but I guess i could look at alternatives - to be honest I was just scared of cocking up if I used a zipper haha :')

I've started sewing it already workign by the theory that you double over! lad I was right - I've got all the pieces cut out but I've only started sewing thehearts on the center circles so far, I think I unserestimated the amount of time this was going to take! -dies-

I'll definitely look into filling it with foam though - it might even be a cheaper alternatve, you never know. Thanks so much, lifesaver!

I swear - my boyfriend had better be damned grateful for the amount of time/effort this is taking ;) Stay safe!

I didn't actually use a zipper; I sewed most of the cover together on my machine until it was like a box with a hinged lid, and then I did the last three edges by hand. But I can't really say if that's the best way to do it -- the end result looks nice and uniform, but it took me longer than I care to admit to do, since I was trying my best to mimic the neat stitching from the machine. A zipper may be a better solution, especially if you want to be able to wash it. :)

Well i guess that's a point too - I didn't think of washing it :) guess I'll have to invest in a zipper! Haha, hopefulyl I'll get it done by this time next week - with any luck!
