Creation of Vulture Jack

Description

I'm a pretty big fan of getting a glimpse behind the scenes of the work of other people, so to speak.  So, in case this goes for anyone else, I thought I'd put up a bunch of WIP shots from the making of my little devious vulture here.  It's nothing near detailed or explicit enough to qualify as a tutorial, but it can still be interesting to see some in progress pictures, right?

So, here's approximately how a jack-of-many-trades without any real mechanical education might go about building a rather simple mechanical vulture puppet:

1.  Sketching.
2.  A rough full-scale sketch in Chavant clay, and the beginning of a prototype for the head/neck construction.
3.  More technical sketches, after figuring out the construction.
4-5.  Testing the neck prototype.
6-7.  Core construction.  Exchanged those strings for some thicker ones later.
8.  Putting some flesh on those bones.  Body and wings in air-x, head and claws in blue styrofoam.  The expression on his face called for a hand-rolled cigarette, so I added one.
9-10.  Added the skin of the neck, which is done in latex and has some pre-sculpted folds so that it won't crinkle up in too unnatural ways.  Yes, it looks like he's wearing a weird little balaclava, I know. :P  Also bulked up the legs and claws with string, and filled it out with a flexible plastic spackle.
11-12.  Almost there, save for some cosmetic work.  Trying out the neck and head movements with the latex neck skin attached.
13.  Of course, you need to still be able to get inside the vulture in case the strings or plastic bands need replacing.  The shoulders are hinged and can be flipped up for this reason.  (In this picture, you can also see that the wings are also suspended on strings, so that the vulture does this twitchy shrugging motion if you tug on them.)
14.  And there you have him.

Oh my gosh I love this! :D And thanks for the wip-pictures, very interesting to see :) What will it be used for?
