Tentacular hair

Other people who have at some point been afflicted with long hair may know how it is. You might not mean to let it tangle up too badly, but it's so easy to skip combing for a few days or a week or a month, and then it's too much of a bother to do something about it. And hey, newly combed hair hasn't much character anyway, right?, and although the knots of hair are becoming increasingly dread-like it's not as if they couldn't be detangled if you really wanted to, and the hair ties that have vanished into the writhing mass of tendrils weren't very expensive ones anyway, and the kitten that went missing last week is probably just having a small adventure and is bound to show up again any moment.

At the point when it achieves sentience, it's already far, far too late.
